Volleyball Announces Seven For 2009 Recruiting Class
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba College volleyball coach, Ginger Hamric, has announced seven commitments for the upcoming 2009 volleyball season. Joining Catawba for next season is Destin Baker, of Charlotte, NC, Carla Grissom, of Stokesdale, NC, Alli Parrish, of Zebulon, NC, Jordan Raye, of Boonville, NC, Melanie Slack, of Chapel Hill, NC, Kaitlyn Whitmer, of Ferrum, VA, and Jenny Young, of Roanoke, VA.
Baker, a 5-8, setter, started two seasons at Myers Park High School. She served as captain both years and was named team MVP as a senior. She helped the Mustangs to the state finals in 2008 and the final four in 2009. Baker also played with the Union Volleyball Club.
Grissom, a 5-5, defensive specialist, was a three-year letterwinner and two-year starter at Rockingham County High School. She was an all-area and all-conference performer in helping the Cougars to the state playoffs. Grissom was a member of the Piedmont Volleyball Club.
Parrish, a 6-0, outside hitter, was a four-year starter at Smithfield-Selma High School. She was a three-time all-conference selection and helped the Spartans to a state playoff appearance. As a senior, Parrish posted 241 kills, 182 blocks and 421 digs. She totaled 562 kills and 809 digs over her career. Parrish helped the NC Elite 18s Club to a regional and MAPL Championship.
Raye, a 5-9, setter, started three years at Starmount High School. She was a three-time all-conference selection and Player of the Year as a senior. Raye was named conference tournament MVP in as a senior and helped the Rams to three conference and tournament titles. She set school records for assists in a season (1,066) and a career (3,419) and helped Starmount to a 100-21 mark over her three years. The Rams made three state semifinal appearances and were runner-up in 2007. Raye has been with Players Edge and Set Point Volleyball Clubs.
Stack, a 5-11, outside hitter, was a three-year starter at East Chapel Hill High School. She served as captain and was named all-conference. She helped the Wildcats to the state quarterfinals in 2007. Stack has been a member of Triangle Volleyball Club.
Whitmer, a 5-11, outside hitter, was named Western Valley District Co-Player of the Year in 2008. A three-time all-conference and two-time all-region selection, she helped the Eagles to a tournament championship as a senior. Whitmer played club for Roanoke Juniors.
Young, a 5-7, defensive specialist, started four years at Patrick Henry High School and was named Western Valley District Co-Player of the Year in 2008. She was a two-time all-region selection and recorded 815 kills and 944 digs over her career, while serving up 82 aces. Young played club with the Roanoke Juniors.
