Furr, Lyerly and Query Named to Baseball All-State Team

HICKORY, NC -- The North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association has released the 2009 All-State College Division Baseball Team.  Catawba (36-18), who won the 2009 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Baseball Tournament, and UNC Pembroke, who finished 37-17 this year, led the way with three representatives each.  The Catawba Indians were represented by Craige Lyerly (Salisbury, NC/E. Rowan HS), Ryan Query (Kannapolis, NC) and Nathan Furr (Albemarle, NC/W. Stanly HS).

Query, a senior, got the nod at catcher after earning Third-Team All-American honors (ABCA) this year.  Query, who was named to the 2009 First-Team All-SAC and Daktronics NCAA Division II All-Southeast Region squads, batted .384 with 61 runs scored and a team-leading 20 home runs, 21 doubles and 75 runs batted in.  Query is the lone holdover from last year’s all-state squad.

Catawba sophomore Nathan Furr was chosen as the relief pitcher after finishing with a 4-0 mark and a conference-leading eight saves.  Furr also won his lone start in the league tournament and earned the save in the 2009 Food Lion SAC Baseball Tournament Championship second game to help the Indians take the title.

Lyerly, a junior, spearheaded the infield selection after batting .444 and leading NCAA Division II in total hits with 106.  Lyerly, the 2009 SAC Co-Player of the Year and an American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Third-Team All-American, finished the year with a school-record 35-game hitting streak.   Chowan freshman Justin Bagbey (Virgilina, VA) ranked first in the nation in slugging percentage (.985) while setting school records in home runs (17) and runs batted in (64).  Bagbey also batted .478 and ranked in the top ten in NCAA Division II in slugging percentage, on-base percentage and home runs.

UNC Pembroke sophomore Seth Kivett (Bear Creek, NC) was a first-team All-Peach Belt selection after finishing with a .343 batting average while hitting a school-record 16 home runs.  Kivett also scored 57 times and drove in 52 runs.  Mount Olive senior Rich Racobaldo (Marlton, NJ) was the 2009 Carolinas Conference Co-Player of the Year and a Daktronics NCAA Division II All-Southeast Region First-Team honoree after batting .417 and hitting 15 home runs.  Racobaldo, the 2008 NCAA Division II South Atlantic Region Tournament MVP, added 60 runs scored and 64 runs batted in this year while ranking nationally in 10 offensive categories.  Racobaldo was also named to the all-tournament team at the 2008 NCAA Division II National Championship for the first-place Trojans in 2009.

The three outfielders were led by Wingate senior Mark Letchworth (Greenville, NC), who was named the 2009 SAC Co-Player Of The Year and earned Daktronics and ABCA NCAA Division II All-Southeast First-Team honors.  Letchworth, also a Third-Team All-American (ABCA) in 2009, batted .392 to go along with 59 runs scored, 18 home runs, 66 runs batted in and a league-leading 20 doubles.  UNC Pembroke senior Kevin Dietrich (Charlotte, NC) earned First-Team All-Peach Belt Conference accolades in 2009 after establishing school records in home runs (16) and hits (92).  Dietrich also batted .418 with 59 runs scored and 68 RBI.  Lenoir-Rhyne junior Max Loveland (Bradenton, FL) batted .401 with seven home runs, 49 runs scored, 46 runs batted in and 23 stolen bases, all team-highs.  Loveland, one of the best all-around players in the region, also went 2-0 on the mound and tied the school record for saves in a season with seven.  Loveland was named to the South Atlantic Conference and NCAA Division II Daktronics All-Southeast Region Second Teams.

Pfeiffer junior Nick Fogleman (Waxhaw, NC) and UNC Pembroke junior Matt McGovern (Ottawa, CANADA) were named the all-state starting pitchers.  Fogleman finished 9-2 with a 2.18 earned run average and a league-leading 83 strikeouts while being named the 2009 Carolinas Conference Pitcher of the Year.  McGovern went 9-0 this year with a 2.63 earned run average and 59 strikeouts en route to Peach Belt Conference Pitcher of the Year accolades.

Guilford sophomore Kyle Wooden (Monroe, NC) batted a national-leading and a school-record .514 in 2009 as he was selected as the all-state designated hitter.  Wooden, who earned D3Baseball.com Second-Team All-American honors this year as well, established a school-record in hits with 71 and his .588 on-base percentage ranked third in the nation.
