Ahearn Selected By Padres In MLB Draft
SALISBURY, NC -- The San Diego Padres selected Catawba College shortstop, Chris Ahearn (Charlotte, NC/Providence HS), on Thursday in the 39th round of the 2009 Major League Baseball Draft. He is one of four players from the South Atlantic Conference to be selected, joining Newberry’s Thomas Berryhill and Casio Grider and Tusculum’s Rob Currie. Ahearn is also the fourth Catawba Indians to be drafted in the past two seasons.
Ahearn, a transfer from Western Carolina, played in 102 games over two seasons with Catawba and was twice named first team All-SAC. He batted .327, collecting 128 hits. He had 20 doubles, three triples and nine home runs. Ahearn scored 86 runs, drove in 63 runs and swiped 23 bases.
