Softball makes C-N work for DH sweep

SALISBURY, NC -- League-leading Carson-Newman swept a South Atlantic Conference softball doubleheader from host Catawba on Wednesday afternoon at Whitley Field. The Lady Eagles won by the scores of 8-3 and 8-2 to improve to 36-6 overall and 11-1 in the SAC. Catawba falls to 14-36-1 and 0-12. Catawba battled the SAC-leaders to the final inning of the opener, tying the game in the sixth on a two-out double by Katie Phelps (Preince Frederick, MD). Catawba took the early lead after a RBI-single by Jen Ropp (Broadway, VA) in the first. Carson-Newman would grab its first lead in the fourth on a two-out, two-run double by Mary Roberts (Knoxville, TN). Catawba would answer in its fourth as Val McDowell (Crofton, MD) led off with a single and later scored on a wild pitch. The Lady Eagles went back on top after Lindi Strable’s (Sieverville, OH) sacrifice fly, but Catawba would tie the game on Phelps’ second double of the opener. Carson-Newman finally pulled away in the seventh, getting a run-scoring single from Strable and a RBI double by Cristi Benton (Snellville, GA). Kera Croteau (Lawrenceville, GA) iced the game with a three-run homer. Marci Mitchell (Lithonia, GA) scattered nine hits in improving to 22-2. Phelps led Catawba with three hits. The Lady Indians would again take the early lead in the second game. Catawba recorded five hits int he third inning, getting RBI singles from Amanda Myers (Lynchburg, VA) and McDowell to lead 2-0. Carson-Newman was held off the board until the fifth, when the Lady Eagles used a Catawba error and a controversial count call to plate five runs and take control. Libby Conley (Maryville, TN) got C-N on the board with a RBI single to center and went to third on an error. Val Steele (Soddy Daidy, TN) followed with a squeeze bunt to tie the score. Libby Seal (Greenback, TN) appeared to have struck out for the innings second out, but was ruled to have just two strikes and promply singled to center to put Carson-Newman on top. Brooke Randolph (Chattanooga, TN) followed with a two-run homer and a 5-2 edge. The Lady Eagles added three more runs, all unearned in the sixth for the 8-2 win. Mitchell (23-2) earned another win, allowing nine hits and striking out three. Conley, Steele, Seal and Randolph each had two RBI. Shannon Handy (Advance, NC) had two hits for Catawba. #######
