Chunn Leads Volleyball to Opening Wins at Lenoir-Rhyne Invitational
HICKORY, NC -- Catawba won both of its matches on the opening day of the Lenoir-Rhyne Invitational Volleyball Tournament on Friday at Shuford Gym. The Lady Indians swept past Fayetteville State, 26-24, 25-10 and 25-15 in the first match, then topped UNC Pembroke 25-18, 25-27, 25-20 and 28-26.
Senior Jasmine Chunn (East Bend, NC/Forbush HS) led Catawba with nine kills vs. FSU and added a career-best 15 kills with six blocks in the win over UNC Pembroke. Freshman Alli Parrish (Zebulon, NC/Smithfield-Selma HS) picked up 10 kills against UNCP and seven in the opening win over Fayetteville State. Libero Mai Zoua Lo (Hickory, NC/Foard HS) tallied 23 digs vs. UNCP and served five aces against FSU.
After surviving a tight opening set with Fayetteville State, Catawba ran off to easy wins in the final two sets. The Lady Indians faced a set-point against at 24-23 in set one, but Chunn got a kill to tie the set and Parrish would add a kill to end it.
Lo served four aces in an eight-point spurt early in the second set to stake the Lady Indians to a 12-2 lead. FSU never got within nine points during the rest of the set. Lo had an ace in game three to help Catawba to a 7-3 edge, but FSU rallied to tie the set at 11-all. Chunn had a pair of kills in a four-point run for a 15-11 lead. Catawba stretched the lead from there, getting the final six points on the serve of Parrish which included three aces.
Catawba split its first two sets against UNC Pembroke then used a 7-2 run in set three for a 21-16 lead. UNCP pulled within 21-19, but two kills by Chunn and an ace by Kaitlyn Whitmer (Ferrum, VA/Franklin Co. HS) gave Catawba the set win. The Lady Indians trailed 23-21 late in set three before kills by Whitmer and Chunn and a combo block by Chunn and Parrish put Catawba up 24-23. UNCP staved off three match points before Parrish ran off consecutive kills to end it.
