Retundie's Late Strike Gives Women's Soccer 2-2 Draw in Opener
MISENHEIMER, NC -- Pfeiffer University and visiting Catawba College battled to a 2-2 draw to open up the 2009 women’s soccer season on Saturday afternoon at Lefko Field. The Lady Falcons took a brief 2-1 lead in the 85th minute before the Lady Indians fought back for the tie with a goal in the 87th minute.
In the final five minutes of play, Pfeiffer’s Alyssa Wombwell (Grand Blanc, MI) headed home a cross from the right goal line sent in by Ashley Hawkins (Madison, NC) to regain a 2-1 advantage. Catawba responded just under two minutes later on a shot ten yards out from Alyssa Retundie (Mooresville, NC/Lake Norman HS) that found the back left post for the final tally of the afternoon.
Megan Blevins opened the scoring in the 17th minute on a penalty kick as Catawba goalkeeper Chelsea Binder (Woodstock, MD) committed the foul against the Lady Falcons Kirsten Bartsch (Leesburg, VA). Pfeiffer would hold that 1-0 lead at the half.
Meritt Rollins (Columbia, SC/Lippen HS) evened things up for the Lady Indians finding the back of the net just outside the 18-yard box in the 54th minute. Catawba outshot Pfeiffer 20-7 in the match.
