RALEIGH, NC -- The Catawba football team avenged its opening season loss from a year ago with a 25-7 victory over host St. Augustine’s on Saturday afternoon at Broughton High School Stadium.  Transfer quarterback Cameron Sexton (Laurinburg,NC/UNC/Scotlanc Co. HS) threw for 336 yards and two scores, while junior wide out Gerron Bryant (W. Palm Beach, FL/Boynton Beach HS) had six catches for 106 yards to lead the Indians.

Catawba out-gained the Falcons in total yardage 424 to 162 and the Tribe defense recorded 11 tackles for losses.  Thomas Trexler (Wilmington, NC/New Hanover HS) provided the lone points of the opening quarter with a 29-yard field goal, giving Catawba a 3-0 lead at the 2:55 mark of the quarter.  Midway through the second frame, Sexton tossed a 13-yard strike to Brandon Bunn (Virginia Beach, VA/Fork Union) as the Tribe would lead 9-0 at the break.

The Indians went up 11-0 early in the third quarter when Marqus Davis (Charlotte, NC/N. Mecklenburg HS) tackled a Falcon runner in the end zone.  Antonio Hall (Greensboro, NC/NE Guilford HS), who ran for 84 yards, extended the lead to 18-0 on a one-yard run with 14:53 to play.

St. Augustine’s took advantage of Catawba’s lone turnover, coming on an interception by Charles McKenzie, to produce its lone points.  Joaquin Green tossed a 32-yard pass to Richard Abney to pull the Falcons within 18-7 with 7:37 left.  Catawba salted things away when Sexton connected on a 39-yard pass to Travis Landrum (Inman, SC/Chapman HS) with 3:16 remaining.

Sexton completed 23-of-40 passes in his debut with Catawba.  Landrum and Eric Morman (Rockingham, NC/Richmond Senior HS) each had four receptions.  Davis and Melquan Fair (Raleigh, NC/E. Wake HS) each had a sack and three stops for losses, while freshman Jumal Rolle (Wilson, NC/Beddingfield HS) had two interceptions.
