Football Avenges Last Season's Opening Loss With 25-7 Win Over St. Augustine's
RALEIGH, NC -- The Catawba football team avenged its opening season loss from a year ago with a 25-7 victory over host St. Augustine’s on Saturday afternoon at Broughton High School Stadium. Transfer quarterback Cameron Sexton (Laurinburg,NC/UNC/Scotlanc Co. HS) threw for 336 yards and two scores, while junior wide out Gerron Bryant (W. Palm Beach, FL/Boynton Beach HS) had six catches for 106 yards to lead the Indians.
Catawba out-gained the Falcons in total yardage 424 to 162 and the Tribe defense recorded 11 tackles for losses. Thomas Trexler (Wilmington, NC/New Hanover HS) provided the lone points of the opening quarter with a 29-yard field goal, giving Catawba a 3-0 lead at the 2:55 mark of the quarter. Midway through the second frame, Sexton tossed a 13-yard strike to Brandon Bunn (Virginia Beach, VA/Fork Union) as the Tribe would lead 9-0 at the break.
The Indians went up 11-0 early in the third quarter when Marqus Davis (Charlotte, NC/N. Mecklenburg HS) tackled a Falcon runner in the end zone. Antonio Hall (Greensboro, NC/NE Guilford HS), who ran for 84 yards, extended the lead to 18-0 on a one-yard run with 14:53 to play.
St. Augustine’s took advantage of Catawba’s lone turnover, coming on an interception by Charles McKenzie, to produce its lone points. Joaquin Green tossed a 32-yard pass to Richard Abney to pull the Falcons within 18-7 with 7:37 left. Catawba salted things away when Sexton connected on a 39-yard pass to Travis Landrum (Inman, SC/Chapman HS) with 3:16 remaining.
Sexton completed 23-of-40 passes in his debut with Catawba. Landrum and Eric Morman (Rockingham, NC/Richmond Senior HS) each had four receptions. Davis and Melquan Fair (Raleigh, NC/E. Wake HS) each had a sack and three stops for losses, while freshman Jumal Rolle (Wilson, NC/Beddingfield HS) had two interceptions.
Green went 10-for-20 for 90 yards for St. Augustine’s. Walter Sanders led the ground attack with 57 yards on 14 carries. Stephen Stanback totaled 11 tackles for the Falcons with McKenzie adding 10. Steven Stanback had two sacks.
