Volleyball Falls to Wingate in League Opener

SALISBURY, NC -- Wingate got 11 kills each from Lauren Billo (Orland Park, IL) and Jacki Emmenecker (Perrysburg, OH) to claim a three-set win over host Catawba in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Tuesday night at Goodman Gym.  The Bulldogs open league play with a 25-22, 25-21 and 25-17 victory to improve to 9-0 overall and 1-0 in the SAC.  The Catawba Indians fall to 5-4 and 0-1.

Wingate pulled away late to grab the win in the opening set which saw a dozen ties and five lead changes.  Catawba held a 21-19 edge after a kill by Taylor Doss (Boonville, NC/Starmount HS) and a Bulldog hitting error.  Alli Parrish (Zebulon, NC/Smithfield-Selma HS) gave the Lady Indians a 22-21 edge on a kill, but Wingate reeled off the final four points.  Billo had three kills and an assisted block in the closing run.

The Bulldogs rolled out to a 13-5 lead in set two, but Catawba would storm back to tie the set at 16-all when Parrish capped a 11-3 run with a service ace.  Kills by Rebecca Bloemer (Louisville, KY) and Liz Willis (Raliegh, NC) helped Wingate stay in front.  The Bulldogs scored five of the last seven points in the set.

Consecutive kills by Parrish gave Catawba an early 11-7 lead in set three before Wingate took control with a 13-2 run.  Stormi Gale (Richmond, TX) had four kills in the surge and Maggie Malone (Chicago, IL) had a pair of aces.

Gale added nine kills for Wingate, while Willis had five kills, 13 digs and 30 assists.  Malone added 17 digs and two aces.  Catawba was led by Doss, who had 10 kills.  Parrish added eight kills and Kaitlyn Whitmer (Ferrum, VA/Franklin Co.
