Men's Soccer Downed By Belmont Abbey
SALISBURY, NC -- Belmont Abbey took a 4-1 decision over host Catawba in men’s soccer action on Wednesday night at Frock Field. The Crusaders got goals from four different players in improving to 1-1-1. The Catawba Indians fall to 1-3.
Matt Powell (Garden Grove, CA) got the scoring started when he was freed on a breakaway on a through ball from Devon Purslow (Cedar Park, TX). Powell raced in from 40 yards out and fired a shot from outside the box for the early edge in the 21st minute. The Crusaders took a 2-0 lead in the 38th minute as Timmi Borges DaSilva (London, ENGLAND) flicked a shot over Tribe keeper Tyler Held (Virginia Beach, VA/Kellam HS) from 10 yards out.
Catawba cut the margin in half less than two minutes later. A shot by Andrew Landry (Oshawa, Ontario, CANADA/Donevan Institute) was saved by Brandon Alvarez (Dallas, TX), but the rebound went back to Landry who fed Spencer Preston (Estero, FL/Estero HS) for the easy blast from the six.
After the break, Belmont Abbey survived a Catawba push then got its two-goal margin back as Jared Britt (Decatur, GA) headed home a rebound off a save from his initial header just past the hour. Emmanual Yamson (Silver Spring, MD) capped the scoring on a shot from the top of the box in the 74th minute.
