Meeks Helps Pace Volleyball Past Pfeiffer
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba won a tight four-set match with visiting Pfeiffer in volleyball action on Thursday night at Goodman Gym. The Catawba Indians won by the scores of 19-25, 25-11, 27-25 and 27-25 in improving to 6-4 overall. The Falcons fall to 3-5.
Shay Meeks (Kings Mountain, NC/Kings Mountain HS) came off the bench after missing the first set to lead Catawba with 15 kills. Taylor Doss (Boonville, NC/Starmount HS) followed with 10 kills, while Jasmine Chunn (East Bend, NC/Forbush HS) and setter Megan Courson (Statesville, NC/W. Iredell HS) each tallied seven kills.
Pfeiffer was led by Jordan O’Bryant (Reidsville, NC), with 13 kills, and Brittany Dickens (Raleigh, NC), who followed with a dozen kills. Dickens added 11 digs, while Colleen Wands (Apex, NC) handed out 26 assists. The Falcons hit 32.4% in the opening set, but hit only 6.4% over the final three sets.
Each team struggled in one of the opening two sets. Pfeiffer used an eight-point run on the serve of Abbie Ovbey (Mt. Gililad, NC) to take command of the first set at 19-12. O’Bryant had three kills in the run.
Catawba rolled to an easy win in set two. Mai Zoua Lo (Hickory, NC/Foard HS) had two aces and Meeks four kills in a run that gave the Lady Indians a 12-3 lead. A second run was sparked by three kills from Alli Parrish (Zebulon, NC/Smithfield-Selma HS) to put Catawba on top 21-9.
The Lady Indians led for most of the third set, but a late Pfeiffer run gave the Falcons two swings for the set. A ball handling error and a kill by Meeks staved off the chances. Catawba scored the final three points with the last coming on an ace by Jenny Young (Roanoke, VA/Henry HS).
The final set saw 15 ties and eight lead changes. Meeks had three kills and Parrish an ace to help Catawba to an early 11-6 edge. Pfeiffer responded and tied the set at 12-all on consecutive kills by O’Bryant. Pfeiffer then enjoyed its biggest edge at 18-15 before a four-point run put the Lady Indians back on top. The Falcons held off a pair of match points before Meeks record back-to-back kills to end the contest.
Chunn picked up five blocks for the Lady Indians, while Courson handed out 38 assists, recorded 11 digs and served a pair of aces. Lo also had a pair of aces and 20 digs.
