SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba scored five third-quarter touchdowns and went on to defeat visiting Livingstone 51-0 to claim the Mayor’s Cup in football action on Saturday night at Shuford Stadium and Kirkland Field.  The win improves the 17th-ranked Catawba Indians to 3-0, while the Blue Bears fall to 0-3.

Livingstone held Catawba to just six points in the opening half, the fewest scored by Catawba in the opening half during the 11-game series.  The lone points came on the final play of the first quarter when Patrick Dennis (Durham, NC/Cedar Ridge HS) threw a 36-yard pass to Brandon Bunn (Virginia Beach, VA/Fork Union).  A bad snap on the point-after left the score at 6-0.  The drive was set up when Livingstone failed on a fake punt at its own 41.

Catawba would jump on the Blue Bears in the second half, scoring on its first seven possessions.  The Indians gained nearly 400 of its 520 total yards in the final half.

On its first drive of the third quarter, Catawba marched 54 yards on six running plays, scoring on Antonio Hall’s (Greensboro, NC/NE Guilford HS) three-yard run.  Hall had 39 of the yards in the drive.  After a short punt, Catawba was on the board again in just three plays.  Hall’s 26-yard run to the five helped set up a two-yard run by Josh Wright (Raeford, NC/Hoke Co. HS) and a 20-0 lead just 4:16 into the second half.

Hall added another short scoring run and Gerron Bryant (W. Palm Beach, FL/Boynton Beach HS) caught a pair of touchdown passes to close out the third quarter scoring.  The first, from Dennis, covered 47 yards.  The second was a 48-yard strike from Daniel Griffith (Salisbury, NC/N. Rowan HS).

In the fourth quarter, Thomas Trexler (Wilmington, NC/New Hanover HS) kicked a 46-yard field goal and Aaron Cauble (Salisbury, NC/E. Rowan HS) recovered a blocked punt for a score.  The punt was blocked by Jaspen Gray (Advance, NC/Davie Co. HS).

Catawba finished with 272 yards on the ground with Hall eclipsing 100 yards for the second straight game.  He finished with 118 yards on 17 carries.  Casey Hall (Concord, NC/NW Cabarrus HS) had 98 yards on 14 attempts.  Bryant had three catches for 133 yards.  Dennis went 12-of-24 for 182 yards, while Griffith was 2-for-5 for 66 yards.

The Catawba defense held Livingstone to just 92 total yards.  Livingstone had a net rushing total of minus-one yards.  National sack leader Marqus Davis (Charlotte, NC/N. Mecklenburg HS) added two more to his total which now stands at eight after three games.

For Livingstone, Steven Williams (Decatur, GA) went 8-for-24 through the air for 72 yards and added 11 yards rushing.  Linwood Jenkins (Newport News, VA) caught four passes for 37 yards.  Alkeem DeLoatch (Halifax, NC) made 11 tackles and forced a fumble.
