Lacrosse falls in DSC semis

SALISBURY, NC -- Second-seeded St. Andrews scored eight goals in the final 8:25 of the opening quarter and went on to defeat Catawba, the #6-seed, 20-4 in a semifinal of the 2002 Deep South Conference menís lacrosse tournament on Friday night at Frock Field on the campus of Catawba College. The Knights improve to 9-5 and advance to face top-seeded Limestone in Sundayís 2 p.m. championship game. Catawba ends its season at 6-8. The game was scoreless until a goal by Stephen Belderes at the 8:25 mark of the first quarter. St. Andrews added two scores by Andre Kovacs at 8:10 and 5:36, then got three goals in a 30 second span with just under three minutes in the quarter to go up 6-0. The Knights would add two goals in the final 33 seconds of the quarter to take an 8-0 lead. Neither team scored in the second quarter. St. Andrews dominated possession by winning 22 of 27 face-offs and holding a 61-29 edge in ground balls. Catawba would get on the board at the 14:25 mark of the third quarter on a tally by Pat Huskins, but the Knights would fie in a row for a commanding 13-1 edge. Belderes would lead the Knights with six goals and added an assist, Peter Gut had three goals, while Kovacs, Scott Gordon, Mike McCarthy and Keith Belward each scored two goals.
