Nava's Hat Trick Sparks Men's Soccer Past Chowan
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba got three goals from freshman Valentin Nava (Salisbury, NC/Carson HS) and two more from senior Andrew Landry (Oshawa, Ontario, CANADA/Donevan Inst.) and went on to defeat visiting Chowan 7-0 in men’s soccer action on Wednesday night at Frock Field. The win snaps a three-game losing streak for the Catawba Indians, who improve to 2-4. The Hawks fall to 0-5.
Nava opened the scoring as he collected a rebound off the crossbar after a long blast from Deon Cuffie-Joseph (Arima, TRINIDAD & TOBAGO/High Point) in the fourth minute. He added a second following a cross from Alain Lengliz (Blackpool, ENGLAND/Blackpool College) three minutes later.
Landry dribbled up the goal line and tucked home a shot from the goal mouth in the 10th minute and Nava scored from a sharp angle in the 37th minute for a 4-0 edge at the break. The outburst doubled the Tribe’s goal scoring total in its opening five games of two goals. Nava equaled that mark in the opening seven minutes on his own.
In the second half, Landry raced in on a breakaway and Lengliz scored off a cross from Cuffie-Joseph. Nate Over (Chambersburg, PA/Chambersburg HS) closed out the scoring after taking a pass off a free kick from Kevin Sorensen (Mathews, NC/Butler HS). The seven goals was the most by Catawba since it topped Mars Hill by a 7-0 count in the opening round of the 2004 SAC Tournament.
Catawba held a 26-7 edge in shots. Tyler Held (Virginia Beach, VA/Kellam HS) teamed with Josh Payne (Candler, NC/Enka HS) for the shutout. Held had one save, while Payne stopped two shots. Josh Cenci (Chesapeake, VA) made the start for the Hawks and made a pair of saves in the opening half. Ariah Mousaviadegan (Yorktown, VA) played the second half and had eight saves.
