After Ruling, Women's Golf Drops to 2nd at Lady Falcon Inv.

 BADIN, NC -- Following a rule interpretation, Catawba dropped to a second-place finish at the Lady Falcon/McNairy Invitational which was held at the 5,922-yard, par-72 Old North State Club at Uwharrie Point.  After reviewing the United States Golf Association (USGA) rule 33-2B/1, tournament officials decided the final round could count.  Three sets of tees on holes #5, #8 and #11 were moved after the final round had begun and since the final round scores did not provide a distinct and significant advantage or disadvantage.

Carson-Newman takes the team event with a score of 622, edging out the Catawba Indians by three strokes.  Sarah Jane Sinard of Carson-Newman takes home medalist honors with a two-day total of 145. Sinard posted the best score in both rounds with a one-under 71 on Monday and a two-over 74 on Tuesday to finish +1 for the tournament. 

By counting the second round, Catawba junior Elizabeth Smith (Avon Lake, OH/Magnificat HS) sets a new career low as she fired a 73 in the final round.  The finishing round moved her to a fourth-place finish.  Kelsey Babos (Uniontown, OH/Lake HS) was eighth with a 162 total.

“Carson-Newman deserved to win the tournament,” stated Catawba Coach Sam Gealy.  “We played with them in the final round and played the exact same tees as they did.  We had our chances, but they played very well on Tuesday.  I am really happy that we get to count Elizabeth’s [Smith] final round with it being her career low, and for Kelly [Berry], who rebounded nicely from her first round as a freshman.”
