Baseball splits doubleheader with TusculumSALISBURY, NC -- Catawba College and visiting Tusculum split a South Atlantic Conference baseball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Newman Park. Catawba took the opener 4-1, while Tusculum held on for an 8-7 win in the nightcap. Catawba now stands at 26-20 overall and 10-8 in the SAC, while Tusculum is 26-22 and 10-10. The Indians lost a chance for the league crown earlier in the day as Carson-Newman swept a doubleheader from Mars Hill. Catawba scored all its runs in the opener in the first inning. Israel Morrow (Claremont, NC) delivered a RBI triple, while Curt Motsinger (Kernersville, NC) doubled home a run. Brian Hatley (Salisbury, NC) had a key two-out, two-run single to cap the scoring. That was enough for Tribe ace Zach Snyder (Lexington, NC), who shutout the Pioneers until the ninth. Tusculum managed just one hit over the first eight innings, a two-out bunt single by David McMahon (Knoxville, TN) in the sixth. Mike Holt (Jefferson City, TN) would end a streak of 32 consecutive scoreless innings tossed by Snyder against league opposition with a one-out homer in the ninth. It was also the first earned run allowed by the sophomore to a SAC team in 39 innings. Motsinger doubled twice for Catawba in the opener, while Spence Southard (Greensboro, NC) and Chad Hill (Bennett, NC) also had two hits. Snyder allowed just three hits in improving his mark to 8-2. He walked two, hit two and struck out three. Tusculum used a two-out, three-run homer by Holt in the second inning of the nightcap to built a 4-0 lead. Catawba got a RBI triple from Matt Smith (Browns Summitt, NC) and a run-scoring hit from Motsinger to close within 5-2, but Holt hit a sacrifice fly and Casey Taylor (Clinton, TN) had a two-out, RBI single to push the margin to 7-2. The Pioneers took an 8-3 lead to the last inning and Catawba looked to be going quietly with two out and no one on, when the Indians got two hits, a walk and a grand slam by Blair Reynolds (King, NC) to shave the deficit to 8-7. Two pitchers later, Catawba had runners at first and second, but Matt Bakerís (Charlotte, NC) line drive into the gap in left was caught by McMahon. Holt had two hits and four RBI to lead the Pioneers, while Taylor drove in two on a pair of hits, including a homer. Reynolds had three hits for Catawba, while Smith, Hill and Motsinger each had two. Jason Burleson (Knoxville, TN) evened his mark at 3-3, while Justin Aldredge (Lafollette, TN) recorded the last out to earn his seventh save. #######
