Smith's Late Goal Lifts Men's Soccer to Second Straight Win
ROCKY MOUNT, NC -- Freshman Carson Smith (Mooresville, NC/Mooresville HS) scored on a breakaway with around 15 minutes remaining as Catawba rallied for a 3-2 win over host N.C. Wesleyan in men’s soccer action on Saturday afternoon at Scalf Field. The win improves the Catawba Indians to 3-4 on the year, while the Bishops fall to 3-3.
Catawba twice battled back from a goal down before taking the lead when Alain Lengliz (Blackpool, ENGLAND) freed Smith on his breakaway in the 83rd minute. Andrew Landry (Oshawa, Ontario, CANADA/Donevan Inst.) had evened the match at 2-2 in the 68th minute off a cross from Kevin Sorensen (Matthew, NC/Piedmont HS) .
The Bishops struck first in the 33rd minute. Michael Muhseler one-timed a deflection from seven yards out to give NCWC the lead. Lengliz drew the Indians level with just under three minutes left in the half as he headed home a corner kick from Landry.
Muhseler put the Bishops back on top 10 minutes into the second half, taking a feed from Edfar Zaldivar. Sorensen then struck the equalizer and Smith followed with the game-winner.
Wesleyan held a 27-14 edge in shots, but Tyler Held (Virginia Beach, VA/Kellam HS) repelled 10 Bishop shots. Philipp Uttikal made seven saves for NCWC.
