Volleyball Drops Three-Setter at Tusculum
GREENEVILLE, TN -- Tusculum hit at a 30% clip for the match and defeated visiting Catawba in three sets in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Saturday afternoon at Pioneer Arena. The Pioneers improve to 6-7 overall and 1-2 in the SAC, while the Catawba Indians fall to 7-5 and 1-2. Tusculum won by the scores of 25-16, 25-16 and 25-23.
Only five players posted kills for Tusculum with four sharing the team lead with nine. Sam Underwood, Bailee Price, Gina Coffaro and Carly Swisher each posted nine kills with Alyssa Raterman adding seven. Swisher chipped in with five blocks and a pair of aces, while Underwood tallied a team-high 16 digs.
Jasmine Chunn (East Bend, NC/Forbush HS) and Alli Parrish (Zebulon, NC/Smithfield-Selma HS) each posted seven kills for Catawba. Mai Zoua Lo (Hickory, NC/Foard HS) posted 16 digs, while Megan Courson (Statesville, NC/W. Iredell HS) had 23 assists, nine digs and a pair of aces.
Tusculum jumped to a quick 10-3 lead in the opening set and held the lead throughout, hitting at 46%. Consecutive kills by Kaitlyn Whitmer (Ferrum, VA/Franklin Co. HS) closed the gap to 10-6, but another surge by the Pioneers gave the hosts a 19-9 lead and an easy set win.
The second set was tighter early. A kill by Taylor Doss (Boonville, NC/Starmount HS) pulled Catawba within 16-13. That would be as close as the set would be after an early 9-9 tie as a pair of aces by Swisher keyed a 5-1 run for a 21-14 edge.
Catawba moved out a 9-6 lead at the start of set three on a kill by Chunn. Tusculum would fight back and grabbed an 11-10 edge on a kill by Coffaro. The Pioneers moved out to a 20-16 lead on a Price kill before Catawba rallied to tie the set at 23-all. A service error by Catawba and an attack error provided Tusculum with the winning points.
