Softball swept by LR in regular season finale

HICKORY, NC -- Lenoir-Rhyne College swept a South Atlantic Conference softball doubleheader from visiting Catawba on Saturday afternoon. The Bears won by the scores of 3-2 and 10-2 and improved to 37-8 overall and 11-3 in the SAC. Catawba fell to 14-38-1 and 0-14. Catawba hung tough in the opener, battling back from a 2-0 deficit to tie the score on when Cari Griffin (Olney, MD) scored on a RBI ground out by Jackie Carson (Summerland Key, FL). Griffin accounted for both runs, scoring earlier on an error, collecting two hits and reaching by a walk for the game. Val McDowell (Crofton, MD) had the other hit by Catawba. Audrey Kreske picked up the win for Lenoir-Rhyne, allowing just the three hits and no earned runs. Natasha Crouse singled home a run in the third and Casey Ledford forced home another when she was hit by a pitch to give the Bears a 2-0 lead. After Catawba tied the game, Kristi Pfaffendorf led off the sixth with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice and scored on a two-out, pinch-hit single by Misty Bingham. Lenoir-Rhyne jumped on Catawba in the second game. The Bears used a pair of errors to score two in the opening frame, then added six in the second. Brandi Mueller had a three-run double and Ledford added a two-run double. Catawba scored its two runs in the fourth on a RBI double by Carson and a ground out by Katie Phelps (Prince Frederick, MD). McDowell added two hits in the nightcap, while Carson and Amanda Myers (Lynchburg, VA) each had a hit and scored a run. Mueller had two doubles and three RBI for Lenoir-Rhyne, while Brady Horne and Monica Crouse also had two hits. #######
