Volleyball Pounds Lenoir-Rhyne in Three Sets
Meeks led the way with 13 kills
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba rolled to a three-set sweep over visiting Lenoir-Rhyne in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Friday night at Goodman Gym. The Catawba Indians won by the scores of 25-16, 25-9 and 25-22 to improve to 8-5 overall and 2-2 in the SAC. The Bears fall to 13-4 and 1-1.
Shay Meeks (Kings Mountain, NC/Kings Mountain HS) led Catawba with 13 kills and added three blocks, while Jasmine Chunn (East Bend, NC/Forbush HS) added seven kills and three blocks. Freshman Kaitlyn Whitmer (Ferrum, VA/Franklin Co. HS) posted eight kills and 11 digs with Mai Zoua Lo (Hickory, NC/Foard HS) recording a team-high 22 digs.
Jordan Ledford (Newton, NC) led Lenoir-Rhyne with nine kills and eight digs. Brooke Christenberry (Statesville, NC) registered four blocks and Marrissa Church (Statesville, NC) posted 14 digs.
Catawba jumped out quickly in the first two sets. The Lady Indians got consecutive aces from Alli Parrish (Zebulon, NC/Smithfield-Selma HS) to grab a 12-2 advantage in the opening set. Catawba led 16-4 before Lenoir-Rhyne began to cut into the lead. A Ledford kill cut the margin to 22-16, but a kill by Chunn and two attack errors gave the set to Catawba.
Meeks and Chunn delivered two combo blocks and a kill each to get Catawba out to a 7-2 lead in set two. Whitmer, Chunn and Megan Courson (Statesville, NC/W. Iredell HS) each had a pair of kills as the Lady Indians raced to a 22-5 lead and dominated the set.
Lenoir-Rhyne came alive in the third set and held an early 11-8 lead after a kill by Chelsea Hill (Lexington, NC). Catawba rallied, getting four kills by Meeks in a run that pushed the Lady Indians on top 19-15. A Lindsey Cantu (Orlando, FL) kill pulled the Bears within 21-19, but a kill and ace by Whitmer pushed Catawba to match point at 24-19. Lenoir-Rhyne got to 24-22 before Meeks killed off the win.
