Women's Soccer Opens SAC Play With Win at Mars Hill
MARS HILL, NC -- Catawba rallied from an early deficit and opened league play with a 3-1 win over host Mars Hill in South Atlantic Conference women’s soccer action on Saturday afternoon at Meares Stadium. The win improves the Catawba Indians to 6-2-1 overall and 1-0 in the SAC. The Lions fall to 1-9 and 0-2.
Mars Hill took the lead off a corner kick in the 37th minute. Abbie Hoard delivered the corner to Brittany Downs who found the back of the net. Catawba came right back to even things before the half. Just five minutes later Alyssa Retundie (Mooresville, NC/Lake Norman HS) was able to get the equalizer, hitting from 30 yards out.
The Lady Indians added two goals in the second half before the hour. Katie Gair (Milton, Ontario, CANADA/St. Mary Catholic HS) put Catawba on top in the 53rd minute off a shot from 25 yards and Kristen Girardi (Asheville, NC/N. Buncombe HS) followed in the 59th minute from the top of the box off an assist from Maria Borland (Hagerstown, MD/N. Hagerstown HS).
Catawba held a huge 22-10 advantage in shots. Lindsay Webster (Hopkinton, MA/Hopkinton HS) made six saves for the Lady Indians. Chelsea Parker had seven saves for Mars Hill.
