Baseball drops final regular season game to Tusculum

SALISBURY, NC -- George Hanger (Stauton, VA) hit two home runs and accounted for all five Tusculum runs as the Pioneers defeated host Catawba 5-1 in South Atlantic Conference baseball action on Sunday afternoon at Newman Park. Tusculum improves to 27-22 overall and 11-10 in the SAC, while Catawba falls to 26-21 and 11-9. The Pioneers move into a three-way tie for fourth place in the SAC, while Catawba will finish third. Catawba scored its lone run in the first inning on a single by Chad Hill (Bennett, NC). The Tribe threatened for more, but with the bases loaded and one out, Pioneer starter Kenny Lewis (Scottsville, VA) struck out two batters to end the inning. Catawba would not have another baserunner until the seventh inning. Tusculum took the lead in the third on a grand slam by Hanger. Hanger would add a solo shot in the seventh for the 5-1 lead. Catawba would hit into double plays in both the seventh and eighth innings to quell any rally attempt. Lewis allowed just four hits, with two walks and two strike outs, working into the eighth inning. Jason Davis (Ashland, KY) pitched the final two innings to earn his fifth save. Hangerís only two hits were his home runs, while Jose Martinez (Caracas, VENEZUELA) and Robbie Bouman (Sterling, VA) collected three hits. Catawba will most likely face Wingate in the opening round of the SAC Tournament on Thursday, while Tusculum will likely face Lenoir-Rhyne. #######
