Volleyball Rallies From 2-0 Hole Before Falling in Five at Newberry
NEWBERRY, SC -- Newberry held off a Catawba rally to record a five-set win in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Friday night at Eleazer Arena. The loss spoiled outstanding performances by a pair of Catawba freshmen. Setter Jordan Raye (Boonville, NC/Starmount HS) posted a triple-double with 10 kills, 16 digs and 32 assists in her first career start, while Kaitlyn Whitmer (Ferrum, VA/Franklin Co. HS) recorded a team-high 15 kills and 21 digs. With the win, Newberry improves to 12-8 overall and 3-3 in the SAC, while the Lady Indians fall to 8-7 and 2-4.
Lorena Maia led four Newberry players with double-digit kills, posting 16. Fernanda Frey and Leah Nye each added a dozen kills, while Kember Lichtie tallied 10. Frey and Lichtie added 18 and 15 digs, respectively.
Newberry scored the first four points of the opening set before Catawba got going. The Lady Indians scored six of the next seven points to go on top 6-5 on a kill by Whitmer. The set stayed tight with the Lady Indians leading 18-17 after a kill by Katie Moran (Northville, MI/Northville HS). From there, Newberry took control, scoring five straight points, three on kills by Frey to lead 22-18. Catawba got within 22-20 on a block by Jenny Young (Roanoke, VA/Patrick Henry), but a service error was followed by two Newberry kills to end the set.
Set two saw each team enjoy mini runs. Newberry took control late on a 4-1 run that was capped by consecutive kills by Maia. Whitmer had back-to-back kills to get Catawba within 23-21, but Newberry got the last two points for a two-set edge.
Catawba rebounded to win set three and gain momentum. The Lady Indians erased an early 9-5 deficit on a 5-1 run that included a pair of kills by Raye and another by Young. The teams traded points until a kill and combo block by Moran put Catawba up 15-13. Newberry tied the set at 19-all on a kill by Frey, but Catawba reeled off six of the next seven points. Whitmer’s consecutive kills with a 21-20 lead started a final 4-0 run.
In set four, Catawba rallied from an early 13-5 deficit. Three kills by Young helped Catawba close the gap to 16-13 then an ace by Taylor Doss (Boonville, NC/Starmount HS) and a kill by Moran tied the set at 17-all. The Lady Indians followed with a four-point run that led to a 22-18 lead. Raye had two kills before Doss killed off the final point to force the deciding fifth set.
Newberry pulled out the tight fifth set, scoring the final four points. Raye had helped give Catawba a 9-7 lead on her 10th kill and a combo block with Doss. Maia reeled off three kills to pull Newberry even at 10-all. The Lady Indians led 12-11, but a kill by Lichtie and a combo block by Nye and Niki Hroblak put the hosts up 13-12. After an attack error, Frey killed off the final point.
