Football Overcome by Newberry in 40-21 Loss
SALISBURY, NC -- Newberry rolled up 545 yards of offense - including 329 yards on the ground - in a 40-21 win over 21st-ranked Catawba in South Atlantic Conference football action on Saturday afternoon at Shuford Stadium and Kirkland Field. Newberry moves to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in the SAC, while the Catawba Indians fall to 3-2 and 0-2.
Senior S.J. Worrell (Madison, GA) rushed 19 times for 237 yards and two touchdowns, averaging 12.5 yards per carry. Worrell earned the second-most rushing yards in a single game in Newberry history on the day, behind only Alex Haynes' 255 yards against Bowie State in 2007. Brandon Gantt (Lexington, SC) completed 21-of-35 passes for 211 yards with two touchdowns.
Newberry took the opening kickoff and went 44 yards on 10 plays, scoring on Gantt’s draw from five yards out on third down. Catawba answered the score in five plays. Cameron Sexton (Laurinburg, NC/Scotland Co. HS) completed passes of 22 yards to Gerron Bryant (W. Palm Beach, FL/Boynton Beach HS) and 15 yards to Grayson Downs (Mt. Pleasant, NC/Mt. Pleasant HS) to set up a four-yard score by Antonio Hall (Greensboro, NC/NE Guilford HS).
Newberry took the lead for good early in the second quarter. After missing a 39-yard field, Bruce Bagley (Winnsboro, NC) hit Sexton on Catawba’s first play and Apollo Stretch (Columbia, SC) made a diving interception at the Tribe 26. Gantt tossed an 11-yard pass to David Smith for the 14-7 lead.
Newberry took control of the game with two scores in the final four minutes of the half. Gantt threw a 19-yard pass to Brian Bostick (Florence, SC) with 3:49 left then hit Bostick with a 26-yard pass to set up his second scoring run, from seven yards out, with 55 ticks before the break. Bostick finished with 104 yards on six receptions.
Catawba’s special teams got them back in the game briefly as Jaspen Gray (Advance, NC/Davie Co. HS) blocked a Newberry punt the resulted in a two-yard run by Josh Wright (Reaford, NC/Hoke Co. HS) to trim the deficit to 28-14 at the 11:21 mark of the third quarter. Calvin Hall (Concord, NC/NW Cabarrus HS) intercepted Gantt on the next Newberry possession, but the Indians could not capitalize.
Worrell began to put the game away after that. He scored on a 61-yard run with 3:18 left in the quarter and set up a fourth quarter score with a 46-yard run. Worrell capped that drive with a one-yard run for a 40-14 Newberry lead with 7:04 remaining. Catawba got the final score on a 46-yard fumble return by Melquan Fair (Raleigh, NC/E. Wake HS).
Newberry held Catawba to just 176 total yards and posted seven sacks. Andre Moyd (Andrews, SC) had a pair of sacks and forced a fumble he recovered. Brandon McCall (Sumter, SC) also had two sacks and a forced fumble.
Sexton completed just 8-of-25 passes for 122 yards. Hall led the way on the ground with 46 yards on a dozen carries. Lakeem Perry (Louisburg, NC/Louisburg HS) recorded 11 tackles and forced a fumble on defense. Fair added a sack and an additional tackle for loss to his fumble return for a score.
