Goal and Assist From Wilhelm Helps Women's Soccer Past Lenoir-Rhyne
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba posted a 3-1 win over visiting Lenoir-Rhyne in South Atlantic Conference women’s soccer action on Wednesday afternoon at Frock Field. Tasha Wilhelm (Mt. Savage, MD/Beall HS) had a goal and an assist to help the Catawba Indians improve to 8-3-1 overall and 3-1 in the SAC. The Bears fall to 10-3 and 1-2.
Lenoir-Rhyne got on the scoreboard first, just 9:04 into the match, as Marianne Broevik (Brammen, NORWAY) converted a penalty kick. Catawba equalized less than two minutes later on a strike from freshman Katie Gair (Milton, Ontario, CANADA/St. Mary Catholic) at the top of the box.
Wilhelm gave Catawba the lead in the 31st minute. After a free kick at the top of the box from Andrea Dunshie (Apex, NC/SE Raleigh HS) hit the crossbar, Wilhelm collected the rebound and shot into a vacated goal from 12 yards out.
The Lady Indians salted the match away just past the hour off a free kick. Wilhelm directed the kick into the box and Maria Borland (Hagerstown, MD/N. Hagerstown HS) beat her defender and knocked in a one-touch volley from the six. Catawba held a slight 10-9 edge in shots and had a 7-5 advantage in corner kicks.
Lindsay Webster (Hopkinton, MA/Hopkinton HS) made three saves in goal for the Lady Indians. Katelyn Burwell (Carthage, NC) and Caitlin Scruggs (Torrance, CA) shared duties in goal for Lenoir-Rhyne and each made a save. Scruggs played the final 27 minutes.
