Volleyball Sweeps Past Carson-Newman to Level League Mark at 4-4

JEFFERSON CITY, TN – Catawba swept past host Carson-Newman for a three-set win over the Lady Eagles in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Saturday morning at Holt Fieldhouse.  The Catawba Indians won by the scores of 25-21, 25-22 and 25-15 in improving to 11-7 overall and leveling their SAC mark at 4-4.  The Lady Eagles fall to 11-7 and 5-3.

Freshman Kaitlyn Whitmer (Ferrum, VA/Franklin Co. HS) paced Catawba with 15 kills, while sophomore Shay Meeks (Kings Mountain, NC/Kings Mountain HS) tallied 13 kills, following up her career-high effort of 20 on Friday at Lincoln Memorial.  Freshman Alli Parrish (Zebulon, NC/Smithfield-Selma HS) picked up 13 digs and two aces, while setter Megan Courson (Statesville, NC/W. Iredell HS) collected 34 assists with an ace.

An early 4-1 spurt in set one, sparked by three Whitmer kills, gave Catawba an 8-5 edge.  Carson-Newman rallied to tie the set at 15-all on a kill by Carly Mozgai and the teams traded the next eight points.  An ace by Parrish and two errors lifted Catawba to a 22-19 lead then kills by Meeks and Whitmer kept the lead at three until an error pushed the Lady Indians to the set win.

Consecutive kills by Meeks and an ace by Parrish gave Catawba an early lead in set two and the Lady Indians never looked back.  A kill by Racheal Bowlin pulled the Lady Eagles within 19-16, but Courson started a 5-1 run with a kill that brought Catawba to set point.  Bowlin had a pair of kills and a block to help Carson-Newman rally within 24-22 before Parrish killed off the final point.

Catawba broke away midway through the third set.  Leading 13-12, a kill by Katie Moran (Northville, MI/Northville HS) sparked a seven-point run for a 20-12 edge.  Jenny Young (Roanoke, VA/Patrick Henry HS) had one ace and Whitmer two kills in the run.  A kill by Courson and an ace by Mai Zoua Lo (Hickory, NC/Foard HS) moved the lead to 23-15.  A kill by Taylor Doss (Boonville, NC/Starmount HS) and a C-N attack error gave Catawba the match.

Jasmine Clark led Carson-Newman with 13 kills.  Katie Troyer had nine kills and three blocks.  Libero Angelle Hayes tallied 14 digs, while setter Stephanie Cutter had 26 assists.
