Softball ends season with two close losses at SAC TournamentCLINTON, SC – Catawba College fell in two close games at the 2002 South Atlantic Conference Softball Tournament on Thursday. The event is a part of the 2002 SAC Sports Festival and is being held at Presbyterian College. Catawba opened against top-seeded Carson-Newman and just as in the regular season the game would be decided in the Lady Eagles final at bat. In the bottom of the seventh tied at 1-1, Lauren Hildebrand led off with a double and was sacrificed to third. Libby Conley followed with a single to end the game. Catawba had tied the game in the sixth as Cari Griffin was hit by a pitch, moved to second on a single by Amanda Myers and scored on a double by Val McDowell. McDowell had two hits to pace Catawba, while Shannon Handy allowed only seven his on the mound. The loss dropped the Lady Indians into the loser’s bracket and were eliminated with a 4-2 loss to Presbyterian. The Blue Hose jumped out to a 3-0 lead, but saw Catawba get RBI singles by Liz Corbett and Jessica Rivera in the fifth to close within 3-2. Corbett and McDowell led Catawba with two hits apiece. Catawba finished the season at 14-40-1. #####
