Borland Nets Winner as Women's Soccer Tops UNCP
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba freshman Stephanie Borland (Hagerstown, MD/N. Hagerstown HS) scored the lone goal in a 1-0 win over visiting UNC Pembroke in women’s soccer action on Tuesday night at Frock Field. With the win, the Catawba Indians improve to 9-3-2, while the Braves fall to 8-4-1.
Borland notched her goal, the second of the season, in the 13th minute and Catawba made the tally stand up. Alyssa Retundie (Mooresville, NC/Lake Norman HS) freed Borland with a through ball at the top of the box and the freshman slid a shot from 15 yards out under UNCP keeper Rea Segoviano (Jacksonville, NC).
UNC Pembroke took 14 shots on the night, but could not find the net. Britney Joiner (Jacksonville, NC) hit the post in then 53rd minute and sent a breakaway shot wide in the 68th. Anna Svensson (Norrkoping, SWEDEN) would hit the post on a knuckling deflected shot in the 73rd minute and Joiner was again just wide in the final chance in the 78th minute.
Lindsay Webster (Hopkinton, MA/Hopkinton HS) saved for shots as she collected the shutout in a battle of regionally ranked teams. Segoviano had a pair of saves off six Catawba shots for the Braves.
