Men's Soccer Falls in Home Finale to Newberry
SALISBURY, NC -- Newberry got a pair of goals from Tornubari Nyonebue (Rivers State, NIGERA) and went on to defeat host Catawba 4-2 in South Atlantic Conference men’s soccer action on Thursday night at Frock Field. Newberry improves to 2-10-2 overall and 1-4 in the SAC, while the Catawba Indians fall to 4-8-1 and 0-4-1.
Newberry twice erased one-goal deficits and scored three times in the second half to rally for the win. Nyonebue answered an opening goal by Catawba as he dribbled though the Catawba defense and fired in a shot from the top of the box. The tally came five minutes after the Indians opened the scoring in the eighth minute when freshman Valentin Nava (Salisbury, NC/Carson HS) scored from 10 yards out after a pass from Deon Cuffie-Joseph (Arima, TRINIDAD & TOBAGO).
Catawba retook the lead in the final minute of the first half. Kirby Freeland (Charlotte, NC/Providence HS) sent a through ball to Andrew Landry (Oshawa, Ontario, CANADA), who tallied his team-leading seventh goal of the season, slotting a shot under Newberry keeper Joel Johnson (Sangre Gande, TRINIDAD & TOBAGO) from 10 yards out. The goal came with just 33 seconds left before the break.
Newberry equalized again just before the hour. Adrian Ochoa (East Point, GA) slid a shot under Catawba keeper Tyler Held (Virginia Beach, VA/Kellam HS) from 15 yards out in the 58th minute. Nyonebue gave Newberry the lead with 15 minutes remaining as he collected a rebound off a Catawba defender. Newberry went up by two goals, benefitting from an own goal with just over 10 minutes left.
Each keeper made seven saves on the night in the light rain. Catawba held a 15-14 edge in shots and took five corners to three for Newberry. Newberry drew four yellow cards in the physical contest with Catawba earning two. Newberry had 25 fouls to 13 for the Indians.
