Volleyball Loses to Tusculum in Four Sets
SALISBURY, NC -- Tusculum knocked off host Catawba in four-sets in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Saturday afternoon at Goodman Gym. Gina Coffaro (Cincinnati, OH) led Tusculum with 19 kills and 29 digs. The Pioneers won by the scores of 22-25, 27-25, 25-11 and 25-14 in improving to 15-10 overall and 6-5 in the SAC. The Catawba Indians fall to 12-9 and 5-6.
Alyssa Raterman (Urbana, OH) added 16 kills for Tusculum, while Carly Swisher (Fort Collins, CO) had 15 kills and four blocks. Setter Peyton Colclough (Manassas, VA) dished out 54 assists. The Pioneers hit 34% after the opening set, including 52% in the third set.
Catawba was led by Shay Meeks (Kings Mountain, NC/Kings Mountain HS) and Kaitlyn Whitmer (Ferrum, VA/Franklin Co. HS) with 12 kills each. Libero Mai Zoua Lo (Hickory, NC/Foard HS) registered 30 digs.
The Lady Indians jumped out to an 18-10 lead in the opening set before Tusculum began to gain momentum. The Pioneers went on an 11-4 run to pull within 22-21. Catawba was able to hold on to take the set on a kill by setter Jordan Raye (Boonville, NC/Starmount HS).
Swisher had four kills and an ace as Tusculum rolled to a 16-8 lead in set two. Catawba rallied behind the serving of Lo and three kills from Whitmer to close the gap to 16-15. The Lady Indians eventually took the lead at 24-23 on kills by Alli Parrish (Zebulon, OH/Smithfield-Selma HS), Meeks and Megan Courson (Statesville, NC/W. Iredell HS). Coffaro had two kills to stave off two set point for the Pioneers. Swisher had a combo block and a kill to win the set for Tusculum.
The Pioneers had just one hitting error with 15 kills in the third set. Catawba stayed close early, down 11-7 after a kill by Taylor Doss (Boonville, NC/Starmount HS), but the Lady Indians scored just four points the rest of the set. Coffaro had four kills and five digs in the set to lead Tusculum.
Coffaro helped Tusculum to an early lead in the fourth set with three straight kills for a 12-5 lead. Meeks kept the set close with a kill to make the score 16-10 then Tusculum scored five of the next seven points for a 21-12 edge. Swisher had a kill and block down the stretch before Bailee Price (Fort Wayne, IN) killed off the final point.
