Swimming Breaks Six Marks in Opening Meet at Mars Hill
MARS HILL, NC -- Catawba opened its swim season at Mars Hill on Saturday at Chambers Gym. The women claimed a 157-110 win, while the men fell 151-110 to the Lions. Highlighting the meet were school-record swims on the women’s side by Laurenn Singleton (Elkin, NC/Elkin HS) in the 100 back, Lindsay Yarborough (Lexington, NC/C. Davidson HS) in the 50 back and by the 200 medley relay team and Mikael Karlsson ((Norsborg, SWEDEN/Tullinge) in the 50 back and 100 free and Christoffer Stolt (Stockholm, SWEDEN/Fryshuset) in the 100 fly for the men.
The Catawba women won 11 of the 14 events, including the 200 medley to open the meet. Yarborough, Katie Huff (Richfield, NC/N. Stanly HS), Singleton and Leah Constan-Tatos (Johannesburg, SOUTH AFRICA/St. Andrews HS) posted a record time of 1:53.69. Yarborough set a record for the 50 back (29.09) in the opening leg of the relay.
Singleton went on to win three individual events, including the 100 back where she swam a record 1:00.56. She set a freshman mark in winning the 100 fly (1:01.11) and also won the 200 IM. Huff and Ashley Owens (Stockbridge, GA/Stockbridge HS) each won two events. Owens posted a freshman record in the 1000 free (11:14.26) and also won the 500 free. Huff took top honors in the 100 and 200 breaststroke.
Yarborough swam a freshman record in winning the 200 back (2:11.28), while Victoria Kiefner (Charlotte, NC/Providence HS) won the 50 free. Huff, Yarborough, Owens and Kiefner teamed to win the 400 free relay.
For the men, Alex Walpole (Pembroke Pines, FL/Cheyenne Mountain(CO) HS), Karlsson and Stolt won events. Walpole claimed a win in the 200 free, Karlsson took the 100 back and Stolt in his record swim in the 100 fly (54.86). Karlsson opened the 200 medley relay with a 50 back record (27.07) and tied the mark in the 100 free (49.52).
