Volleyball Holds On For Five-Set Win at Lenoir-Rhyne
HICKORY, NC -- A late block and ace from Taylor Doss (Boonville, NC/Starmount HS) helped Catawba escape Shuford Gym with a win in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Wednesday night. The Catawba Indians won by the scores of 25-21, 25-19, 23-25, 19-25 and 15-11 to improve to 13-9 overall and 6-6 in the SAC. The Bears fall to 17-10 and 3-7.
Catawba had overcome an early 5-3 deficit in the fifth set and led 9-8 when Doss combined with Alli Parrish (Zebulon, NC/Smithfield-Selma HS) for a block. Her subsequent ace and a Lenoir-Rhyne error pushed the Lady Indian lead to 12-8. A kill and block from Jasmine Chunn (East Bend, NC/Forbush HS) pushed Catawba to match point at 14-9. The Bears held off the Catawba win on kills by Chelsea Hill and Jordan Ledford, but a hitting error gave the Lady Indians the match.
Freshman Kaitlyn Whitmer (Ferrum, VA/Franklin Co. HS) led Catawba with 16 kills and added 11 digs. Shay Meeks (Kings Mountain, NC/Kings Mountain HS) followed with 15 kills and four blocks. Doss had seven blocks and chipped in with six kills, while libero Mai Zoua Lo (Hickory, NC/Foard HS) recorded 24 digs and served three aces.
Lenoir-Rhyne was led by Lindsey Cantu with 14 kills and 19 digs. Hill, Ledford and Kassi Henry each posted 10 kills. Setter Meredith Lutz handed out 48 assists, while adding two aces and three blocks.
Catawba used a four-point run midway through the opening set to go up 16-11. The Bears pulled within two at 20-18, but kills by Whitmer, Megan Courson (Statesville, NC/W. Iredell HS) and Doss kept Catawba up by three. Doss and Meeks combined on a block for set point.
The Lady Indians got off to a strong start in set two, leading 9-3. Two kills each by Hill and Cantu helped Lenoir-Rhyne close within 11-10. Aces by Lo and Courson helped Catawba run out to an 18-13 lead and the Lady Indians held at least a three-point lead the rest of the way. A Lo aced ended the set. Catawba hit 35% in the set, with Meeks collecting seven kills on 13 swings with no errors.
Lo served her third ace to give Catawba a 4-1 edge in set three, but the Bears rallied an went on top 13-6 after a kill by Cantu. Doss served an ace in a seven-point Catawba run that tied the set at 13-all. A Ledford kill helped the Bears overcome a 20-18 deficit to lead 21-20. A Whitmer kill gave Catawba a 23-22 edge, but the Bears scored the final three points.
In the fourth set, Catawba held an 18-15 edge after a Chunn block before Lenoir-Rhyne stormed back. Cantu had consecutive kills to tie the set and four Catawba errors saw L-R take a 22-18 lead. Cantu forced the final set with a kill on match point.
