Borland's Two Tallies Lifts Women's Soccer Past LMU
HARROGATE, TN -- Freshman Maria Borland (Hagerstown, MD/N. Hagerstown HS) scored twice to spark Catawba to a 2-1 win over host Lincoln Memorial in South Atlantic Conference in women’s soccer action on Saturday afternoon at the LMU soccer field. The Catawba Indians move to 10-4-2 overall and 4-2-1 in the SAC, while the Lady Railsplitters fall to 6-7-2 and 2-4.
Borland struck with just under three minutes left in the first half to break a scoreless tie. Manuvering through LMU defenders, Borland freed herself for a one-v-one situation with LMU keeper Sarah Thompson, scoring as she chipped a shot into the back left corner.
Borland struck again just before the hour mark. Taking a pass from Kristen Girardi (Asheville, NC/N. Buncombe HS/W. Carolina), Borland chipped one in from the just outside the box to put Catawba on top 2-0 at the 58:15 mark.
Lincoln Memorial pulled a goal back five minutes later. Sarah Taylor slipped around a defender on the left side of the box and placed a shot past Catawba keeper Lindsay Webster (Hopkinton, MA/Hopkinton HS). Webster kept LMU off the board from there, making one of her five saves down the stretch.
Thompson had four saves for the Lady Railsplitters. Catawba held a 13-10 edge in shots with LMU holding a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks
