Volleyball Sweeps Brevard Behind Whitmer and Young
BREVARD, NC -- Freshman Kaitlyn Whitmer (Ferrum, VA/Franklin Co. HS) posted 19 kills to help Catawba to a three-set sweep over host Brevard in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Saturday afternoon at Boshamer Athletic Center. The Catawba Indians improve to 14-9 overall and 7-6 in the SAC, winning by the scores of 25-16, 25-22 and 25-19. The Tornados fall to 11-12 and 1-11.
Whitmer was the only Lady Indian to reach double digits in kills, but fellow freshman Jenny Young (Roanke, VA/Patrick Henry HS) had nine kills and 13 digs. Setter Megan Courson (Statesville, NC/W. Iredell HS) led the team with 14 digs and 38 assists.
Brooke Seaman led Brevard with 11 kills and four blocks, while Chelsea Larsen added nine kills and 10 digs. Bethany Stevenson contributed 29 assists and libero Rebecca Schoonover posted 16 digs.
The Tornados and Indians were tied early in the first set at three apiece then Whitmer got the hot hand. She delivered eight kills in a 10-point stretch, including five in a row at one point, as the Lady Indians rode the freshman to a 19-9 lead. Brevard attempted to mount a comeback late in the set as Seaman and Larsen connected on back-to-back shots, but Whitmer closed out the first set with a pair of kills to raise her total to 10 in the opening set.
Brevard used an early 5-0 run in the second set to go up 8-7 as Seaman placed an ace and Larsen and Atkinson added kills to the effort. Catawba responded with a 6-1 spurt that included a pair of kills by Young for a 13-9 edge. Another Young kill and two from Whitmer pushed the lead to 17-12. Young twice had kills late to give Catawba two-point leads then Whitmer killed off the last two points.
Catawba used a kill and block by Young to grab a 16-12 lead in set three. After Brevard pulled within a point at 18-17, Whitmer had a kill to spark a six point run that included a kill and two blocks from Jasmine Chunn (East Bend, NC/Forbush HS). The Tornados staved off a pair of set points before Whitmer appropriately ended the match on her final swing.
