Women's Soccer Blanks Brevard 6-0
SALISBURY, NC -- Sophomore Alyssa Retundie (Mooresville, NC/Lake Norman HS) had a goal and an assist to help Catawba to a 6-0 win over visiting Brevard in South Atlantic Conference women’s soccer action on Friday afternoon at Frock Field. The win improves the Catawba Indians to 12-4-2 overall and 5-2-1 in the SAC. The Tornados fall to 6-11-1 and 0-7-1.
Retundie opened the scoring in the 14th minute. A long ball from near midfield by Laela Ghorbani (Highlands Ranch, CO/Highlands Ranch HS) bounced at the top of the box and Retundie beat Brevard keeper Sydney Douglas (Houston, TX) with a header as the two collided. Freshman Katie Gair (Milton, Ontario, CANADA/St. Mary Catholic HS) put the Lady Indians up 2-0 at the half with a strike just outside the box that deflected into the right corner in the 22nd minute.
Catawba added a pair of goals two minutes apart midway through the second half. Erinn Wescoat (Egg Harbor, NJ/Absegami HS) took a feed from Andrea Dunshie (Apex, NC/SE Raleigh HS) after a flick from Alanna Hantho (McLean, VA/Langley HS) and scored from the six at the 67.08 mark. Tasha Wilhelm (Mt. Savage, MD/Beall HS) added a penalty kick at 69:05.
Maria Borland (Hagerstown, MD/N. Hagerstown HS) maneuvered through the Brevard defense and found the upper left corner from the top of the box in the 81st minute for her team-leading seventh tally of the season. Amanda Beck (Thomasville, NC/E. Davidson HS) closed out the scoring, tapping a shot over the goal line following a shot off the post from Retundie that was directed under the keeper by Kristen Girardi (Asheville, NC/N. Buncombe HS/W. Carolina).
Douglas had nine saves for Brevard. Catawba held a 33-5 edge in shots with all five Tornado attempts coming in the second half. Catawba keeper Lindsay Webster (Hopkinton, MA/Hopkinton HS) made four saves in posting her fifth shutout.
