Big Night by Meeks and Chunn Lead Volleyball to Four-Set Win
SALISBURY, NC -- Sophomore Shay Meeks (Kings Mountain, NC/Kings Mountain HS) delivered a career-high 23 kills and senior Jasmine Chunn (East Bend, NC/Forbush HS) provided a career-high 10 blocks to pace Catawba to a four-set win over visiting Newberry in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Friday night at Goodman Gym. The Catawba Indians won by the scores of 25-8, 22-25, 25-16 and 25-20 in improving to 15-9 overall and 8-6 in the SAC. Newberry falls to 17-12 and 7-7.
Freshman Kaitlyn Whitmer (Ferrum, VA/Franklin Co. HS) followed Meeks with a dozen kills for Catawba. Libero Mai Zoua Lo (Hickory, NC/Foard HS) recorded 29 digs with setter Megan Courson (Statesville, NC/W. Iredell HS) handing out 40 assists. The Lady Indians posted 13 blocks as a team with Chunn knocking down two solo and eight assists. Alli Parrish (Zebulon, NC/Smithfield-Selma HS) had five assisted blocks.
Newberry was led by Lorena Maia (Belo Horizonte, BRAZIL), who recorded 14 kills and 13 digs. Kara Harris (Grandview, TX) served up six aces and collected nine kills. Libero Brianna Blakely (Houston, TX) registered 28 digs and setter Blair Browning (New Lexington, OH) had 33 assists.
Catawba pounced on Newberry early in set one, racing to a 7-1 edge. Parrish had two kills and a block in the early surge. Three blocks by Chunn helped the Lady Indians increase their lead to 15-3. Catawba went on to hit 43.8% in the opening set.
Two aces by Whitmer had Catawba on top in the second set at 18-12, but Newberry rallied. Down 22-17, Harris and Leah Nye (Hoover, AL) combined for a block to give Harris the serve. Using three aces and two kills by Maia, Harris served out the set.
A kill by Meeks started a four-point run that gave Catawba a 10-6 lead in set three. A five-point run, helped by a kill and block by Meeks and capped by an ace by Taylor Doss (Boonville, NC/Starmount HS), pushed the Lady Indian edge to 20-11. Newberry used a 5-1 run to get within 21-16 on a kill by Maia, but a block by Chunn and a kill by Whitmer gave Catawba the set point. Chunn delivered half of her 10 blocks in the third set.
Leading 11-10 in the fourth set, Catawba got a kill and an ace from Parrish as it moved out to a 17-10 advantage. Newberry closed to 21-15 on a kill by Nye, but Whitmer killed off the next three Catawba points for a 24-18 lead. Newberry staved off a pair of match points before Meeks had a kill to end the contest.
