Shutout moves Baseball into winners bracket finalNEWBERRY, S.C. – Israel Morrow went 3-for-5 and stole a pair of bases as No. 2 seed Catawba College blanked No. 7 Mars Hill College 12-0 in a winners’ bracket semifinal of the 2002 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Baseball Tournament Friday afternoon. The double elimination tournament is being held at Kirkland Field, in conjunction with the Food Lion SAC Spring Sports Festival. The Indians (28-21) advance to Saturday’s winners’ bracket final as they face No. 4 seed Tusculum College at Kirkland Field beginning at 2:00 p.m. Catawba starter Chris Abernathy went seven innings and scattered six hits to improve his record to 4-2 on the year. Jeff Abdelnour and David Stroup finished out the final two frames to assist on the shutout. The Indians used a trio of four-run innings, while the Mars Hill stranded 11 runners on base in the loss. Blair Reynolds and Matt Smith each posted two hits. Reynolds belted his seventh home run of the season, while Curt Motsinger clubbed his eight round-tripper of the year in the bottom of the fifth inning. Mars Hill was led by Nick Philemon’s two-hit effort in the loss. MHC will face No. 5 seed Lenoir-Rhyne College later Friday afternoon at 5 p.m. in an elimination game. #####
