Houston Scores 27 In Exhibition Loss to Athletes In Action
SALISBURY, NC – Athletes In Action shot 59%, connecting on 13-of-26 three-pointers, in a 104-88 victory over Catawba in a men’s exhibition basketball game on Monday night at Goodman Gym. Ben Beran led AIA with 16 points, while Bobby Kempf added 13 points and 11 rebounds.
Catawba jumped to a quick 9-0 lead in the opening two minutes on a layup by Rob Fields (Orangeburg, SC/Orangeburg-Wilkerson HS), a three-pointer by Antonio Houston (Charlotte, NC/E. Mecklenburg HS) and a four-point play Fields. AIA would erase the deficit on an 11-1 run to grab its first lead on a three-pointer by Rob Eldridge. A three-pointer by Justin Bourne with 10:05 left in the opening half put the visitors up for good at 24-22.
Catawba cut a 38-25 deficit to 48-45 on a three-point play by Stuart Thomson (Poynton, ENGLAND/Poynton) in the final minute of the first half. AIA pulled away from its 50-46 halftime edge as Trey Clarkson scored eight points in the opening minute of the second half to ignite a 19-8 run. Ben Beran’s layup with 10:35 to go increased the lead to 86-66. An 11-point run by Catawba pulled the Indians within 86-77 with 8:13 left, but that was as close as it would get as AIA went back up by 15 with 3:10 to go.
Houston led all scores for Catawba with 27 points. Fields added 13 points and Dominick Reid (Charlotte, NC/Cannon School) had 11 points and four assists. Bourne also scored 13 poitns for AIA, while Clarkson and Edlridge each tallied 10 points.
AIA held a 50-31 edge on the boards and held Catawba to just 38% shooting. Catawba was 9-of-30 (30%) from three-point range.
