Doss Delivers Career-High 14 Kills as Volleyball Knocks Off LMU
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba got 14 kills each from sophomore Taylor Doss (Boonville, NC/Starmount HS) and freshman Kaitlyn Whitmer (Ferrum, VA/Franklin Co. HS) in a four-set win over visiting Lincoln Memorial in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Friday night at Goodman Gym. The Catawba Indians improve to 16-9 overall and 9-6 in the SAC, winning by the scores of 25-17, 25-20, 20-25, and 25-16. The Lady Railsplitters fall to 21-7 and 10-5.
Doss also added a game-high four blocks to go along with her kills, which were a career-high. Shay Meeks (Kings Mountain, NC/Kings Mountain HS) chipped in with a dozen kills and three blocks, while libero Mai Zoua Lo (Hickory, NC/Foard HS) registered 25 digs. Setter Megan Courson (Statesville, NC/W. Iredell HS) handed out a season high 49 assists.
Lauren Kiwacka (Trapp City, OH) delivered a triple-double in the loss for Lincoln Memorial, recording 10 kills, 11 digs and 28 assists. Amanda Horenkamp (Murfreesboro, TN) had a double-double with 13 kills and a dozen digs. Alicia MacIntyre (Muncie, IN) collected a team-high 19 digs.
Catawba hit 50% in the opening set and pulled away midway through. Leading 15-12, the Lady Indians scored five of six points, including two kills by Whitmer to go on top 20-13. Two more kills by Whitmer and an ace by Courson upped the margin to 23-14. Meeks would kill off the final point of the set.
The Lady Indians rallied to take set two. LMU was strong early, using a 7-2 run to open up a 14-8 advantage. Horenkamp, MacIntyre and Candace Richardson (Houston, TX) each had an ace in the run. Doss had consecutive kills then a block to give Catawba a 21-20 lead. Whitmer served an ace before a kill and block by Meeks pushed the Lady Indians to set point which came on a LMU ball handling error.
The Lady Railsplitters pulled away late to take a tight third set. A kill by Alison Hess (Dayton, OH) snapped the last of 10 ties in the set to give LMU a 14-13 edge. Horenkamp killed off a point to stretch the lead to 22-17 and added two more kills, including the set point.
The fourth set also had 10 ties in the early stages before Catawba used a seven-point run to erase an 11-10 deficit and take a 17-11 lead. Jenny Young (Roanoke, VA/Patrick Henry HS) served the points with Whitmer collecting three kills in the run. An ace by Lo and a kill by Whitmer put the Lady Indians up 21-12. Doss had a block and two kills to get Catawba to match point which Meeks earned on a kill.
