Women's Soccer Bounced From SAC Tournament by #11 Carson-Newman
ROCK HILL, SC -- Top-seeded Carson-Newman rallied to take a 2-1 win over fourth-seeded Catawba in the semifinals of the 2009 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Women’s Soccer Tournament on Friday night at the Manchester Meadows Soccer Complex. The Lady Eagles, ranked 11th in NCAA II, improve to 17-2-1 and advance to Sunday’s final against sixth-seeded Lenoir-Rhyne. The Catawba Indians fall to 13-5-2 and must await a possible at-large berth into the NCAA II Tournament.
After a scoreless first half, Catawba got on the board first as sophomore Alyssa Retundie (Mooresville, NC/Lake Norman HS) took a through ball from senior Tasha Wilhelm (Mt. Savage, MD/Beall HS) and delivered her fourth goal of the season in the 54th minute. Carson-Newman got the equalizer 10 minutes later as a cross from Morgan Gruenenfelder was deflected by Andrea Saevik to the foot of Sandra Kaelin to level the match.
The Lady Eagles scored the game-winner with just under 10 minutes to play. A shot that deflected off a Catawba defender was collected by Trenna Howell, who tallied the goal at the 81:58 mark.
Carson-Newman held a alight 12-10 edge in shots while the corners were even at six each. Catawba keeper Lindsay Webster (Hopkinton, MA/Hopkinton HS) and Lady Eagle counterpart Lauren MacKenzie each stopped four shots.
