Women's Tennis knocks off top-seed, advances to final

NEWBERRY, S.C.- The fourth-seeded Catawba Indians upset top-seed Tusculum 5-3 in the semifinal round of the 2002 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference women’s tennis tournament on Friday afternoon. It was the second win for Catawba over the SAC co-champs in a little over a week and improved the Lady Indians to 17-6. Catawba advances to the finals of the tournament on Saturday at noon against second-seeded and co-champ Presbyterian at Cannon Courts. Catawba won two of three doubles matches, including the #1 position as Gina Ayala and Amy Behrman won the last eight games to post the 8-3 win. In singles, Rachel Morgan won in straight sets for Catawba, while Gabriela Mora and Lesley Murray won for Tusculum to pull the Pioneers even at 3-3. Taryn Gordon and Amy Behrman both won their second set singles 7-5 for the winning points. Catawba's Shelley Gordon was up a set and 5-2 in the second when the match was called.
