Hicks Posts Double-Double as Women's Basketball Falls at Belmont Abbey
BELMONT, NC -- Belmont Abbey junior guard Asha Hardaway posted a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds, eight on the offensive glass, as the Crusaders opened their season with a 60-54 win over visiting Catawba on Friday night at the Wheeler Center. The Catawba Indians fall to 1-1.
Hardaway was among three Crusaders to reach double figures, as senior guard Ashley Giddens led all players with 15 points, while Shayla Jackson followed with 13. Hardaway's eight offensive rebounds surpassed the total number of rebounds for all but one Catawba player. Her 13 rebounds were the game-high as the Abbey dominated the glass with a 52-34 rebounding edge. She also had three assists and blocked three shots.
Catawba was led by Dana Hicks (York, NC/Gaston Day), who had a double-double of her own, with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Milica Ivanovic (Belgrade, SERBIA/Sports High/Bethel) tallied 11 points and Nisha Long (Dallas, NC/Gaston Day) contributed ten.
Belmont Abbey jumped to a quick 7-0 lead and never trailed. The Crusaders stormed to a 26-11 advantage with 5:48 left in the opening half before Catawba got life and rallied back. The Lady Indians used a 15-2 run to cut the deficit to 28-26 in the final minute. Belmont Abbey took a 30-26 lead at the break.
The Lady Indians cut the Belmont Abbey lead to a single point three times in the second half, the last at 41-40 after a layup by Kisha Long (Dallas, NC/Gaston Day). Giddens would hit a three-pointer for the Crusaders after a pair of offensive rebounds for a 44-40 lead with 9:48 left.
Catawba was down 51-48 with 4:34 remaining and missed several attempts to pull closer before Jackson scored with 2:30 left for a 53-48 edge. She added two free throws at the 1:22 mark to stretch the lead to 55-48. The Crusaders hit on 5-of-9 free throws in the final minute to hold off Catawba.
Belmont Abbey shot just 31.7% for the game, but used its big advantage on the boards to score the win. Catawba made 36.4% of its attempts.
