Long Scores Career-High 22 Points As Women's Basketball Ekes Out Win Over Barton
SALISBURY, NC -- Junior guard Nisha Long (Dallas, NC/Gaston Day) scored a career-high 22 points to lift host Catawba to a 59-58 win over Barton in women’s basketball action at the Comfort Suites Shootout on Sunday afternoon at Goodman Gym. The Catawba Indians shook off a cold-shooting first half to improve to 3-2, while the Bulldogs fall to 1-2.
Catawba, which hit just two of its first 20 shots, made just 20.7% (6-of-29) from the floor in the opening half and committed 15 turnovers. Barton hit on just 20.6% (7-of-34) in the first half to lead 17-14.
Long had 18 of her points after the break to lead Catawba back. Dana Hicks (York, SC/Gaston Day) recorded her fourth straight double-double with 11 points and 14 rebounds. Esty Flores (Virginia Beach, VA) led Barton with 13 points, while Jamila Johnson (Garner, NC) had 11 points and seven steals. Jolanda Mitchell (Raleigh, NC) and Destiny Hamlin (Lugoff, SC) each pulled down 10 rebounds.
The Lady Indians scored a mere five points over the first 13:39 and trailed 17-9 with just over two minutes to go in the opening half. A three-pointer by Milica Ivanovic (Belgrade, SERBIA/Sports High/Bethel) and a layup by Hicks got Catawba within three at the break.
Catawba heated up in the second half, canning nearly 60% (16-of-27) of its attempts. A three-point play by Elizabeth Merritt (Lexington, NC/E. Davidson HS) drew the Lady Indians even at 23-all and Long gave Catawba its first lead at 27-26 on a jumper with 14:38 remaining.
Barton used an 11-0 run to pull out to a 37-31 lead, but Long scored six straight points to tie the game then Brooke Whitley (New London, NC/N. Stanly HS) gave the Lady Indians a 40-39 lead on a three-pointer with 7:49 left. After Flores gave Barton a 45-44 edge, Whitley converted a three-point play to put Catawba up for good with 4:52 to go.
Whitley extended the lead to 53-46 on a three-pointer with 4:09 left and Long hit a pair of free throws for a 55-47 advantage with 2:22 remaining. Catawba held a 59-53 lead with 30 seconds left, but Johnson hit a three-pointer and Mitchell converted a second-chance basket with 15 seconds to go to pull the Bulldogs within a point. Mitchell failed to convert the three-point play, but Long missed two free throws with nine seconds remaining to give Barton one last chance. Johnson missed a shot in the lane and Hicks grabbed the rebounds as time expired.
