Hicks Posts Fifth Straight Double-Double in Loss to #23 Lenoir-Rhyne
HICKORY, NC -- Lenoir-Rhyne raced to a 20-point halftime lead and went on to claim an 87-66 victory over visiting Catawba in South Atlantic Conference women’s basketball action on Wednesday night at Shuford Gym. The Bears, ranked 23rd in NCAA II, improve to 4-1 overall and 1-0 in the SAC. The Catawba Indians fall to 3-3 and 0-1.
Dana Hicks (York, SC/Gaston Day) posted her fifth straight double-double to pace Catawba. She had 23 points, hitting on 8-of-14 from the field, and a dozen rebounds. Nisha Long (Dallas, NC/Gaston Day) followed with 12 points and Kisha Long (Dallas, NC/Gaston Day) knocked down 10 points.
Brittany Mitch led the Bears with 21 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Amber Holt added 13 points and Cameron Sealey tossed in 10 points. All three made a pair of three-pointers.
The Bears pulled away late in the first half, outscoring Catawba 23-8 over the last eight minutes. Holt and Kristin Fulmer hit three-pointers to ignite the run. Lenoir-Rhyne hit on nearly 61% in the first half and connected on 5-of-7 three-pointers. Catawba hit half its shots (10-of-20), but were out-rebounded 20-7 and had 11 turnovers.
Lenoir-Rhyne went up by as many as 25 early in the second half before the Lady Indians whittled the margin to as little as 11 at 67-56 with just under eight minutes left. Mitch answered with a three-pointer and the Bears built its lead back to 78-58 with five minutes remaining.
The Bears shot 59% (33-of-56) for the contest and hit 9-of-17 three-pointers. Lenoir-Rhyne finished with 20 turnovers, but offset that with a 39-26 edge on the boards. Catawba shot 42% (23-of-55) for the contest and made just 3-of-16 (19%) from behind the arc.
