Southard, freshmen arms lift Baseball to SAC Tourney title

NEWBERRY, SC – Sophomore Spence Southard (Greensboro, NC) drove home four runs, while three freshmen pitchers combined to pitch Catawba College to the Championship of the 2002 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Baseball Tournament on Sunday afternoon at Kirkland Field. The Indians defeated top-seeded Carson-Newman 5-2 in the final event of the 2002 SAC Spring Sports Festival. Catawba, the third-seed improves to 30-21, while the Eagles fall to 39-17. The tournament championship marked the first for Catawba in three tries as the Indians fell twice after advancing through the winners bracket in both 1992 and 1993 after winning regular season titles. Catawba will now wait to see if 30 wins and the championship will be enough to gain a NCAA II regional bid. Freshman Matt Fairweather (Lenoir, NC) got the start for Catawba and tossed five shutout innings before surrendering a two-run home run to Aaron Shaffer with one out in the sixth. It would be the only runs he would allow, tossing seven and a third innings and scattering five hits with a walk and four strikeouts in improving to 5-1 on the season. While Fairweather kept Carson-Newman at bay, the Indians scored single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to lead 3-2. Southard broke the scoreless tie with two outs in the fourth as he singled home Chad Hill (Bennett, NC), who had singled and stole second. In the fifth, Josh Jordan (Gastonia, NC) drew a two out walk and scored after an overthrow as he took third on a single by Israel Morrow (Claremont, NC). After the Eagles tied the game in the top of the sixth, Southard would again single home Hill, who had led off with a double. Left-hander Jeff Abdelnour (Cohoes, NY) replaced Fairweather with a runner at second and one out in the eighth to face the left-handed hitting Shaffer and recorded a strikeout. Spencer Anthony (Charlotte, NC) registerd the final out of the inning on a ground out to second. Catawba would add a pair of insurance runs in the eighth as Hill and Curt Motsinger (Kernersville, NC) led off with consecutive doubles and scored on a double down the left field line by Southard. Carson-Newman got the tying run to the plate in the ninth, but Anthony induced another grounder to Jordan at second to end the game and earn his first save. Southard was 3-for-4 with his four RBI and stole two bases to set a new Catawba season mark with 30. Hill also had three hits, including two doubles, and scored three runs. Jason Southerland had two hits for the Eagles. Catawba’s pitching was dominant over the weekend as the staff allowed only five runs over four games. Over 36 innings, Catawba posted a 1.25 ERA and allowed just 25 hits. The Tribe defense was also outstanding as the unit made nearly 99% of its plays, making just two errors in 161 chances. The Tribe turned three doubleplays and threw out two of three basestealers. #####
