Rutherford's Double-Double, Strong Defense Key Men's Basketball Win Over Chowan
CHARLOTTE, NC -- Catawba senior Donald Rutherford (Morganton, NC/Freedom HS) recorded a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds in a 78-55 win over Chowan in men’s basketball action on Saturday afternoon at Time Warner Cable Arena. The Catawba Indians improve to 5-3, while the Hawks fall to 3-2.
The Indians never trailed and jumped to a 17-7 lead after eight minutes. Chowan shot just 24% in the opening half in falling behind 35-19. Catawba never let up in the second half as a Rutherford jumper put the Indians up 47-28 with 14 minutes remaining. Catawba led by as many as 25 in the closing minutes.
Antonio Houston (Charlotte, NC/E. Mecklenburg HS) also reached double figures for Catawba with 10 points and a dozen Indians took part in the scoring. Catawba shot 45.5% for the game and held a 42-37 edge on the boards. Chowan hit over 55% in the final half, but finished the game with 21 turnovers to just 13 for Catawba.
Mark Brown (Suffolk, VA) led Chowan with 16 points and nine rebounds. Jaleel Nelson (Suffolk, VA) added 11 points, while Lando Morrison (Yorktown, VA) tossed in 10 points with six boards.
