Women's Basketball Falls Twice at Daytona Beach Shootout

DAYTONA BEACH,  FL -- Catawba lost first half leads in both its games at the Dayton Beach Shootout held at the Ocean Front Center, falling 60-56 to Lee and 79-62 to Clarion.  The losses drop the Catawba Indians to 6-5 on the year.

On Monday, the Lady Indians led virtually the entire contest until Lee, ranked eighth in NAIA, rallied in the final minutes to improve to 11-2.  Catawba scored 11 straight points early in the opening half to lead 21-7 halfway through the period.  Dana Hicks (York, SC/Gaston Day) had seven of her team high 12 points in the run.

After hitting half its shots in the first half, Catawba went cold in the final 20 minutes.  The Lady Indians hit on just 7-of-24 (29%) from the floor, but held the lead until the closing moments.  Brooke Whitley (New London, NC/N. Stanly HS) put Catawba up 54-44 with 8:39 remaining then Lee rallied as Catawba would score only two points the rest of the way.

Maggie Sullivan (Fort Mill, SC/Charlotte Christian HS) scored with 4:33 to go to give Catawba a 56-52 edge.  Allison Radar answered for the Flames ten seconds later and Katie Nelson tied the game with 2:18 to go.  Brooke McKinnon put Lee on top with 1:46 left, its first lead since the opening basket of the game, and iced the game on a basket with two seconds remaining.

Catawba was on fire to open its game with Clarion on Tuesday, racing to a 17-4 advantage.  Clarion, now 7-2, would chip into the lead over the last 12 minutes of the period and pulled even on Bethany Koch’s jumper with three seconds left before the break.

The Lady Indians score just two points over the first six minutes of the second half and fell behind the Golden Eagles 53-32.  Clarion hit on 67% in the second half.  Catawba shot just 35% for the game and was outrebounded 49-32.  Hicks led Catawba with 12 points, while Milica Ivanovic (Belgrade, SERBIA/Sports High/Bethel) also tallied a dozen.
