Late Free Throws Seal Men's Basketball Win Over Chowan

MURFREESBORO, NC -- Catawba snapped a two-game losing streak with a 66-63 win over host Chowan in men’s basketball action on Wednesday afternoon at the Helms Center.  The Catawba Indians hit three free throws over the final 37 seconds to secure the win and improve to 6-5.  The Hawks fall to 4-4.  Antonio Houston (Charlotte, NC/E. Mecklenburg HS) scored 21 points, on 7-of-11 shooting, with five three pointers, but it was Donald Rutherford’s (Morganton, NC/Freedom HS) steal with 10 seconds left that saved the Tribe, which led by eight with two minutes remaining.

Catawba led the entire first half, going up 18-7 after eight minutes.  Houston opened the scoring with a three-pointer and a steal and layup by Dominick Reid (Charlotte, NC/Cannon School) provided the 18-7 bulge.  The Indians held a 34-23 edge at the break as Chowan shot only 21% (5-of-24) in the first half.

The Indians opened a 16-point lead in the opening two minutes of the second half, going up 40-24 on a layup by Donzell Williams (Salem, VA/Glenvar HS).  A free throw by Stephen Coles (Danville, VA/Washington HS) had Catawba up 44-31 with 14:57 left, but the Indians scored just three points over the next five minutes and Chowan roared back to take a 49-47 lead on a three-pointer by Mark Brown with 8:57 to go.

Houston had a three-pointer and Coles a three-pointer play as Catawba went back to a 59-55 lead with 4:55 remaining.  A jumper by Coles had the Indians up 63-55 with 2:16 left then Chowan reeled off eight straight points.  Lando Morrison had all eight points, six from the charity stripe, tying the contest with 48 second to play.

Rob Fields (Orangeburg, SC/Orangeburg-Wilkerson HS) hit one free throw with 37 seconds then Rutherford came up with his steal.  Cameron Lovelace (Cherryville, NC/Cherryville HS/N. Florida) added two free throws with six seconds remaining and Chowan had a turnover to end the game.

Coles posted a double-double for the Indians with 10 points and 10 rebounds, both career highs.  Rutherford had 10 points and blocked three shots.  Reid handed out nine assists.  Morrison had 21 points and 16 rebounds to lead Chowan.
