SALISBURY, NC -- Senior Brooke Whitley (New London, NC/N. Stanly HS) scored 20 of her game-high 22 points in the second half as Catawba rallied for a 78-68 win over visiting Brevard in South Atlantic Conference women’s basketball action on Wednesday night at Goodman Gym.  The Catawba Indians improve to 9-6 overall and 2-2 in the SAC, while the Tornados fall to 6-8 and 0-5.

Whitley came off the bench to equal her career-high, hitting on 8-of-12 shots, including four three-pointers.  Dana Hicks (York, SC/Gaston Day) posted a double-double with 13 points and 14 rebounds, while Nisha Long (Dallas, NC/Gaston Day) also scored 13 points.  Samantha Winn (Candler, NC) led Brevard with 20 points, with Lindsay Brendle (High Point, NC) adding 15.  Amanda Whitaker (Asheville, NC) had 11 points and eight rebounds.

Brevard led 35-31 at the break, but was held scoreless over the first six minutes of the second half and Catawba methodically took the lead.  Kisha Long (Dallas, NC/Gaston Day) gave the Lady Indians a 36-35 edge with 15:43 remaining.  The Tornados would get the lead back at 39-38 on a pair of free throws by Brendle then Whitley gave Catawba a lead it would not give back on a three-pointer with 13:12 to go.

Whitley broke the last tie of the contest on a layup with 11:16 remaining, giving Catawba a 47-45 lead.  She added two three-pointers for a 55-49 lead with 8:06 remaining and put the Lady Indians up double-digits at 69-57 on her final three-pointer with 3:46 left.

Catawba improved on a poor first half shooting performance by hitting on 48% in the second half to finish at 39.3% for the game.  Brevard cooled off from a 50% shooting first half to 43.4% for the contest.  Catawba held a huge advantage on the boards at 49-27, including a 22-7 edge off the offensive glass.

Each team enjoyed first half leads.  Catawba got out to a 15-9 edge, but Brevard rallied back and went up 26-18 after a Winn three-pointer at the 6:42 mark.  The Lady Indians retook the lead at 28-26 before the Tornados closed the half on a 9-3 run.
