Fields and Martin Lead Men's Basketball Over Mars Hill

Martin did not miss a shot in posting a career-high 21 points

MARS HILL, NC -- Catawba won a shootout with host Mars Hill in South Atlantic Conference men’s basketball action, claiming a 103-99 victory at Stanford Arena on Saturday afternoon.  Rob Fields (Orangeburg, SC/Orangeburg-Wilkerson HS) and Lee Martin (Mt. Airy, NC/N. Surry HS/Hargrave) scored 23 and 21 points, respectively, to help the Catawba Indians improve to 10-6 overall and 3-2 in the SAC.  The Lions fall to 8-7 and 3-2.

Martin did not miss a shot on the afternoon as he made all nine field goal attempts, one being from behind the arc, and added a pair of free throws in scoring a career-high 21 points.  The freshman hit double figures for the first time and also added five rebounds a pair of assists and two blocks.  Fields led the Indians with 23 points and was a perfect 11-of-11 at the foul line.

The win by Catawba overshadowed an outstanding effort by Lion Danny Sanders.  The senior tallied 34 points as he hit on 12-of-22 shots, including 7-of-14 from long range.  Sanders also posted six steals.  Dion Malachi totaled 15 points and seven boards off the bench, while Jarred Pickering scored 14.  Stoney Polite had 12 points and eight assists.

The Indians had five double-figure scorers, including Antonio Houston (Charlotte, NC/E. Mecklenburg HS), who hit a pair of key three-pointers down the stretch.  His first three-pointer gave Catawba an 82-79 lead with 4:59 to play and his second upped the margin to 91-83 with 1:59 left.  Sanders hit a couple of three-pointers in the final minute to keep the Mars Hill hopes alive, but Fields canned four free throws and had a break-away layup to keep the Tribe out front.

Catawba led by as many as ten in the opening half, the last at 41-31 after consecutive baskets by Martin at the 5:10 mark.  An 11-2 run by the Lions helped close the gap to 45-42 at the break.  Mars Hill led by five early in the second half, but a 16-6 run by Catawba put the Indians ahead 72-67 with 9:27 remaining.  The game was tied three times after that until Houston’s three-pointer gave Catawba the lead for good.

Houston had 14 points for Catawba and grabbed eight rebounds.  Dominick Reid (Charlotte, NC/Cannon School) and Donald Rutherford (Morganton, NC/Freedom HS) each chipped in with a dozen points.  Catawba shot 59.7% for the game and a stellar 65.6% in the second half.  Mars Hill shot 58% in the final half and 50% for the game.  Catawba enjoyed a 39-30 edge on the boards.
