Swimming Teams Fall to Limestone; Karlsson Sets 200 Back Mark


SALISBURY, NC -- Limestone topped host Catawba in both men’s and women’s swimming action on Saturday afternoon at Johnson Pool.  The Saint women won the final two events to eke out a 99-98 win.  The Limestone men claimed a 114-87 victory.

Marta Stepien won the 200 breast, while the Saint 200 free relay team claimed the final win as Limestone outscored Catawba 22-12 over those final two events.  Stepien also won the 200 IM and was the only double winner for the Limestone women.

Catawba got a pair of wins from Laurenn Singleton (Elkin, NC/Elkin HS), coming in the 100 and 200 free.  Lindsay Yarborough (Lexington, NC/C. Davidson HS) won the 200 back for the Lady Indians and Ashley Owens (Stockbridge, GA/Stockbridge HS) was first in the 500 free.  Singleton and Yarborough were both on the winning 200 medley relay team.

Isabell Nystrom, Raquel Rudolph and Nathania LaPierre also won individual events for Limestone.  Nystrom won the 100 free, Rudolph the 50 free and LaPierre the 200 fly.  That trio, combined with Jenna Arington to win the 200 free relay.

The Saint men got double wins from Blake Schaeffer, Gilles Gutnecht and Lance Maxwell.  Schaeffer took the 100 free and 200 fly, Gutnecht won the 200 free and 500 free, while Maxwell won the 50 and 100 free.  Deniz Bilgin won the 200 breast.

Mikael Karlsson (Norsborg, SWEDEN/Tullinge) was the lone individual winner for Catawba and broke a school record in the 200 back.  The junior swam a time of 2:00.90   He also claimed the top spot in the 200 IM and was a member of the 200 medley relay team.
